The 2-day Boone Campus Overnight Orientation is available for students the Summer before their first semester of classes.
This extended Orientation is available to First-Year and Transfer Students and offers the experience of staying in a residence hall the day before the formal New Student Orientation.
While attending, students can explore App State, connect with other Mountaineers, and participate in additional engaging activities!
Schedule Overview
Day 1: Welcome Activities
Students will check into a residence hall* and take part in activities on day one.
Activities include cardio dance, board & yard games, exploring campus and walking your class schedule, late-night cookies, and more!
- Dinner will be provided.
- Room checks and lights out will be at 10:30 p.m. Students who register for the Overnight Session are required to stay in the residence hall in addition to the welcome activities.

- Most Incoming Students (schedule - PDF) - July 10-11, 14-15, and 17-18.
- Honors College Students (schedule - PDF) - July 10-11 and 14-15.

*Due to other camps and conferences happening on campus, students will not be staying in their assigned residence hall for the academic semester.
Day 2: New Student Orientation Session
Students will be required to completely check out of their residence hall by 8:30 a.m. at the latest.
Breakfast will be available in Central Dining hall for students before meeting registered Parents and Family members for New Student Orientation check-in located at the Plemmons Student Union.
- Orientation is a full day of required programming that will introduce you to campus resources, important policies, and allow you to begin planning out your academic experience at App State.
- Orientation check-in starts at 8:30 a.m. with the formal welcome presentation starting at 9 a.m. The day will conclude with a required check-out for students at 4:30 p.m.

What to Bring
Not sure what to pack? Here is a suggested packing list to make the most of your orientation experience! Remember, this is a one-night experience - please pack light!
- Bedding for a Twin XL Bed (sheets and blanket or sleeping bag)
- Pillow
- Towels
- Toiletries
- Shower Shoes
- Comfortable shoes to walk around in
- Comfortable clothes
- Rain jacket/umbrella
- Water Bottle
Room Assignments
Our office works with App State Conference and Event Services to reserve and assign rooms to registered students.
- All registered students will be staying in 1 to 2 adjacent residence halls* with RA's on duty.
- 2 students will be assigned to each room by gender.
*Due to other camps and conferences happening on campus, students will not be staying in their assigned residence hall for the academic semester.
Roommate Requests
A digital form will be sent to registered attendees close to the date of the event to request important contact and safety information. While filling out this form students can make requests to stay with a specific individual who is also registered for the same session. We will try our best to honor these requests where possible but is not a guarantee. Early submission of the form will increase your chance that your request will be honored.
Contact the Office of Disability Resources, if you need accommodations due to a disability for placement tests or during Orientation. Please submit your request for accommodations at least two weeks prior to your event.
Provided Meals
Students registered to attend the Overnight Orientation will be provided dinner on day 1 and breakfast and lunch on day 2. Students will be dining in our All Access Locations. These locations are all you care to eat. More information on navigating food allergies or dietary restrictions, as well as, daily menus can be found on the Campus Dining website.
Students are encouraged to bring shelf-stable snacks if desired. There are two markets on campus will be open for snacks and last-minute needs. Our dining concepts and markets only take debit, credit, or Apple Pay. Vending machines on campus and in residence halls will accept cash.
Information for Parents and Families
Family members or any support individuals coming are encouraged to register to attend Parent and Family Orientation which will run concurrently with the student orientation session on day 2.
Lodging Information
Parents and family members are responsible for finding their own overnight accommodations, as on-campus housing is strictly for incoming students.
Orientation Parking
Families will park in the Rivers Street Parking Deck for Family Orientation on Day 2.
Overnight Orientation Check-in
Arrival Times
- Bridge to App Students should arrive at 10 a.m.
- Honors College and Watauga Residential College Students should arrive at 11 a.m.
- All other First-Year and Transfer Students should arrive between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. for Check-In
Student Attendee Parking
Participants should follow the Orientation Parking signs to park in the Rivers St. Parking Deck. There will be a shuttle to help get folks to our residence halls for our overnight program (Cone and White Hall). Please review the reminder emails you received to confirm parking and check-in locations for each event.
- You will receive a parking pass once you check in for the event.
Residence Hall Check-In
All students will first check in at the tent outside Cone and White Residence Halls, then head inside their assigned residence hall to receive their housing assignment and key for the night.
- If you submitted a roommate request, please note that we have done our best to accommodate requests, but we cannot guarantee they have been honored.
Cost of Overnight Orientation
The cost to attend the 2-day overnight orientation is $275 and includes lodging and meals for the attendee.
Our office works with Camps and Conference Services to secure the rooms for our 2-day Overnight Orientation.
- If a student registers for an overnight session and can no longer attend we ask that the student change their Orientation registration in their MyMountaineer Portal within 1 week of the session date.
- Students who fail to change their registration date at least 1 week prior to the session will still be charged the full $275 since this room has been secured for them.
