First-year 2-Day Orientation Schedule of Events

All activities are required for students unless otherwise indicated in the session description.

Day 1 - August 16, 2018

8:30 to 9:15 am

  • Parking - Rivers Street Parking Deck
  • Registration & Check-In - Schaefer Center
  • Information Exchange - Schaefer Center
    After check-in, families and students will have the opportunity to visit representatives from campus offices to ask individual questions and pick up information related to each department.

9:30 to 10:15 am

  • Opening Session - Schaefer Center Auditorium

10:30 to 1:50 pm

  • Academic Essentials - (various locations)
    • Meet with your academic advisor in a small group setting to start your academic planning process. At this meeting, you will be assigned a time to meet one-on-one with your Academic Advisor later in the day. Write it down below so you don’t forget it!
  • Lunch
  • SOUL Time - (various locations)
    • Have lunch with your SOUL (Student Orientation Undergraduate Leader) and then get the inside scoop on being a student at Appalachian.

2:00 to 3:45 pm

  • The Appalachian Way - IG Greer Auditorium
    The Appalachian Way focuses on academic integrity, campus involvement, community and what it really means to be an Appalachian student. You will hear from the Office of Student Conduct, the Dean of Student’s Office, the Department of Student Engagement & Leadership, Campus Police, Sustain Appalachian & Counseling Services.
  • Career Explorations - IG Greer Auditorium

4:00 to 5:00 pm

  • Departmental & Degree Program Meetings (various locations)
    Appalachian SOULs will be on Sanford Mall to guide you to departmental and degree program meetings. During these meetings you will talk with a departmental or program representative about planning for your major

5:00 to 5:30 pm

  • Concurrent Sessions for Specific Populations (various locations)
    • Welcome to Teacher Ed! (additional information for education majors)
    • Information session for students interested in health professions
    • Information session for military science & ROTC
    • Information session for out of state students
    • Information session for Multicultural Student Development

6:30 - 9:00 pm 

  • App - Z Welcome! - Sanford Mall

7:00 - 8:45 pm

  • Open Lab Time (for class schedule adjustment) - 024 Belk Library and Information Commons

Day 2 - August 17, 2018

8:30 to 9:15 am

  • Student Veterans Resource Center drop-in - SVRC, 2nd Floor, Student Union 

  • Honors College student meeting - 161 Appalachian Hall

  • Chemistry Placement - Toledo Exam - 417 Garwood

9:10 to 11:00 am

  • Technology Support Services - Grandfather Mtn. Ballroom, Student Union (9:10 - 9:25 am)

  • Living in Community -  Grandfather Mtn. Ballroom, Student Union (9:30 - 10:15 am)

  • Directed Self-Placement for Rhetoric and Composition (English) -  Grandfather Mtn. Ballroom, Student Union  (10:30 - 11:00 am)

11:15 to 2:30 pm

  • Academic Planning, Lunch, and Individual Advising (various locations)
