Why do I need to come to orientation?

This is your opportunity to learn Appalachian’s requirements and policies, plan a program of study tailored to your needs, and meet other students. All of these things will help you make a successful transition. They’re important enough that we require every new student to be part of an on-campus Orientation session.

How do I change my Orientation session date?

Log into your First Connections account and click on the link “Update Orientation Registration.” Simply choose another date that works better with your schedule and resubmit at the bottom of the form.  Your information will automatically be updated.  IMPORTANT:  If your parent or a family member is attending with you, they will need to change their date as well.  Having trouble with a student registration?  Call 828-262-2167.  Having trouble with a parent or family registration?  Call 828-262-7398.

When will I register for classes?

You will register for classes as part of the Orientation process. You will complete an Early Registration Advising course prior to Orientation. When you complete and pass the course, you will receive an email with a PIN and registration information.
You can then begin registering for your first semester classes. Remember, during your Orientation session, you will meet with your major department and academic advisor to complete your schedule.

No one from my school is going to Appalachian, so I won’t know anyone. How will I survive?

Remember, there will be hundreds of new students who won’t know anyone either. You’ll have the opportunity to make friends during the “planning” part of Orientation and during the “getting settled” part of Orientation Welcome Week, when student leaders help you get to know other students. Set your inhibitions aside and walk up to other people to introduce yourself or start making small talk. You’ll feel connected in no time.
